Haven Heartbeats

Hello!

I can only spend a moment here..........to say we are so busy........that I cannot post anything, anytime. Even now.

We have so much to do by next Monday, when we plan to leave for the Sierra Nevadas....where some of you may remember we visited last summer.......and the March before that.......and anytime we can get there. :)

We have an entire stage & set to break down and store.......a nephew from New Hampsfire is coming for a visit......John & Gloria will be here all weekend........to tired to add the rest, but it is a massive to-do list.......STILL.

Please pray for Matthew's knee to heal........it is slow-going. At least his wisdom teeth are healing well and without consequence!

Got to head to bed, after I put a load of laundry on.

Noght and God Bless!

Love, chari

PS I am working on a post.......I hope to post it soon! I have promised Frances I would hurry and get it done................I tried tonight but my computer said: NOT NOW! :)

Sad news for one of my dearest friends......

If you are one of the few who read my blog regularly.........two of which are actually in her own family............you will probably recognize my friend's name.

It is with great sadness for one of my dearest friends, Willa, that I beg these prayers.

Earlier today the sad news came.....that her father passed away this morning, unexpectedly.

Being unexpected does make it all the more painful.

A few specific requests:

.....for Clare, she was to spend ten days with her grandparents next week in Alaska.....and this is especially painful.

.....for Liam as he finishes up his finals at TAC and graduates this weekend.

......for Paddy & Aidan, they are so young and this sorrow is strange to them

......for Willa's mom....she and her husband were a very close couple.....

......for the rest of the family, of course........her other children and husband, and Willa's brothers and their families

And, could you please MOST ESPECIALLY offer a MEMORARE for Willa's dad's soul? He was a Christian, and a good man, but not Catholic.......and Willa has been praying so hard and so long for his conversion......she feels this loss most painfully.

Could you please pray that Memorare for her peace as well? This is one of her favorite prayers.

MEMORARE

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen. Thank you so much for covering my friend, and your friend, in these prayers.

You are all so dear. You may leave a note of condolence here for Willa and family, if you so please.

Thank you so much for your prayers. I know Willa and her family covet them. I do as well.

Blessings,

Chari

So you want to know more about concussions?

Many of you know Garrett (11 yo) suffered a concussion Wednesday night (February 18th) in the 4th quarter of his basketball game. He lost momentary consciousness and has little memory of the game.

Our doctor said he needed to be mellow (no sports) for the next 2-3 weeks. At least one coach was surprised it was so long.

An online friend mentioned she had done reseach after two of her sons suffered severe concussions. One suffered with pain for a year. She said Garrett should not do any sports for two weeks AFTER the symptoms subside. She said teaching others about the seriousness of concussions is a crusade of hers. It is now mine, too.

This got me looking around the internet. According to two sources, Garrett's concussion was moderate to severe (between a Grade 2 and 3) or severe (Grade 3). Shelly witnessed the whole thing.....she says Grade 3.

A week later, he still has a headache, neck ache and occasional dizziness......I will say he still has the ability to argue with his siblings......that's a good sign, right? :)

Concussions are a mild form of TBI, Traumatic Brain Injury.

It usually affects JR/SR aged kids, though occasionally into the college-aged adults.

I wanted to share the info I found, for those of you involved with sports, either as a coach, or a parent.....or both.

Be sure to view the mini-documentary below.

But first, here are some interesting quotes, all taken out of context, and from several sources:

Second Impact Syndrome. Aka SIS. The two cases described above involved repeated head trauma with probable concussions that separately might be considered mild but in additive effect were fatal. The risk for catastrophic effects from successive seemingly mild concussions sustained within a short period is not yet widely recognized. Second Impact Syndrome results from acute, usually fatal, brain swelling that occurs when a second concussion is sustained before complete recovery from a previous concussion that causes vascular congestion and increased intracranial pressure, which may be difficult or impossible to control. (There does seem to be debate about whether this actually exists or not.....seems like a moot point to me.......playing before healed seems pretty dangerous to me.)

Neurologists say once a person suffers a concussion, he is as much as four times more likely to sustain a second one. Moreover, after several concussions, it takes less of a blow to cause the injury and requires more time to recover. (Think football players & boxers.)

Depending on the extent and location of the injury, impairments caused by a head injury can vary widely. The irony of mild head injuries is that often, such injuries do not even require a hospital stay, yet they result in changes so profound that lives are forever changed.

The condition most commonly occurs in American football

Every documented case of SIS has occurred in males, but it is not known whether this is due to a special vulnerability or to a greater exposure of males to second impacts.

You must look at just one link: this is a great video documentary

This is a good, to the point definition

Interesting info about POST-CONCUSSION SYNDROME

Summary of Recommendations of Management of Concussion in Sports below taken from here

Garrett had at least 6 of the nine below, at some point of his injury.

A concussion is defined a head-trauma-induced alteration in mental status that may or may not involve loss of consciousness. Concussions are graded in three categories. Definitions and treatment recommendations for each category are presented below.

Grade 1 Concussion

Definition: Transient Confusion, no loss of consciousness, and a duration of mental status abnormalities of less than 15 minutes.

Management: The athlete should be removed from sports activity, examined immediately and at 5 minute intervals, and allowed to return that day to the sports activity only if post concussive symptoms resolve within 15 minutes. Any athlete who incurs a second Grade 1 concussion on the same day should be removed from sports activity until asymptomatic for 1 week.

Grade 2 Concussion:

Definition: Transient confusion, no loss of consciousness, and a furation of mental status abnormalities of more than 15 minutes.

Management: The athlete should be removed from sports activity, examined immediately and frequently to assess the evolution of symptoms, with more extensive diagnostic evaluation if the symptoms worsen or persist for more than 1 week. The should return to sports activity only after asymptomatic for 1full week. Any athlete who incurs a Grade 2 concussion subsequent to a Grade 1 concussion on the same day should be removed from sports activity until asymptomatic for 2 weeks.

Grade 3 Concussion:

Definition: Loss of consciousness, either brief (seconds) or prolonged (minutes or longer).

Management: The athlete should be removed from sports activity for 1 full week without symptoms if the loss of consciousness is brief, or 2 full weeks without symptoms if the loss of consciousness is prolong. If still unconscious, or if abnormal neurologic signs are present at the time of initial evaluation, the athlete should be transported by ambulance to the nearest hospital emergency department. An athlete who suffers a second Grade 3 concussion should be removed from sports activity until asymptomatic for 1 month. Any athlete with an abnormality on computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging brain scan consistent with brain swelling, contusion, or other intracranial pathology should be removed from sports activities for the season and discouraged from future return to participation in contact sports.

Features of Concussion Frequently Observed:

1.Vacant stare (befuddled facial expression)

2.Delayed verbal and motor responses (slow to answer questions or follow instructions)

3.Confusion and inability to focus attention (easily distracted and unable to follow through with normal activities)

4.Disorientation (walling in the wrong direction; unaware of time, date and place)

5.Slurred or incoherent speech (making disjointed or incomprehensible statements)

6.Gross observable incoordination (stumbling, inability to walk tandem/straight line)

7.Emotions out of proportion to circumstances (distraught, crying for no apparent reason)

8.Memory deficits (exhibited by the athlete repeatedly asking the same question that has already been answered, or inability to memorize and recall 3 of 3 words, or 3 of 3 objects in 5 minutes)

9.Any period of loss of consciousness (paralytic coma, unresponsiveness to arousal)

Prayers for his continued healing requested. He is missing the last two weeks of basketball season.........and at least two more weeks of ski/snowboard season. It is hard to keep him off the hill.........but I just have to.

A picture thought I am sharing........

A great, sunny and warm January ski day.

There's been some good news around here.....

Let's see, where do I start?

How about pregnancy announcements?

Having kept mum for almost three months, we are finally allowed to share: my friend Louise is pregnant! Her birthday is this week...and then she and I will be the same age.......this is is her second baby....and my kids, who just found out last week, are absolutely estatic! I do believe they believe, the next best thing to me having a baby (don't panic, Grandma! :) ), is Louise having a baby.

We also have another local friend due the same week...and she is over 40, too! Yay, Victoria! This will be number 4 for her family.

And, we just found out today, that our dear friend Erica in San Diego is expecting baby#8 the exact same week....and she is over 40 also.

Isn't this exciting!

Congratulations to all three of you........and I am excited that I will be able to share Louise's birth with her.

You are all added to our daily Memorare for expectant moms!

Next good news, it looks as if I have actually found a Certified homeopath, who really and truly does live and practice in my town!!! I will make an appointment shortly to see if we can get these asthma symptoms cleared up once and for all! I met her yesterday. She has been a nurse practitioner for over 28 years and seems to fit the bill. Please pray this is so!

And, more GREAT news! I have not found my way here to mention that one of my close friend's husband had lost his job two weeks ago. We have all been scheming and praying........and on Saturday, he was offered a job.....and, from an employer who had told him almost two weeks before that there was no room for him at their place of business! We are so grateful to God for this opportunity!

And, our community good news.....THERE IS SNOW!!!!!

Our poor little community was so hurting, being a tourist town. We depend on snow for the businesses to make money. This feels so much better.

There may be other good news......but I am at a loss to remember anymore, right now.

So, onto HAVEN HEARTBEATS:

I have finally got the Christmas newsletter finished.......I just need to finish proofreading...and then I can get copies made and mailed. I will not be finishing that project, till I have all of the college & scholarship application stuff cared for........so, a couple of more weeks, I guess! I am getting closer....and will look forward to when this batch is done!!

We have TWO graduates this spring!

Anne will be graduating with her AA.

Matthew will be graduating from high school.

One on May 15 and the other May 28th. And in between? Well, they have college finals and a show........that Anne is directing and Matthew is starring in....plus doing all of the set design and building. And, three other siblings are in the show as well!

I am having these few moments to post because I am waiting for 13 year old Maddelyn, who is in a 50 minute class here at the college. It is a music fundamentals course.....and ugh, it is FIVE days a week! Thankfully, Anne can drive her and Matthew and Sarah three of the days. Marty has been good about driving Maddelyn on one of the days.....so, that leaves only one for me. Phew!!

I am in the college's library.

Garrett, aged 11, for only another month or so, has been on a REAL basketball team. Our little charter school was able to form a team this season. Some weeks, this has meant basketball 6 evenings a week! We have an amazing coach, with amazing experience. He also happens to be the director's husband. that is how we got such a great guy.........he has two boys on the team. We combined with another small team from a private Christian school after the season started......and doubled our game schedule! It has been so good for Garrett......and Malachy loves going to the games. Me, too. They finally had their first win last Friday, in a tournament. It was a great comeback!

I guess the biggest drawback, besides the busy schedule, is the fact that our sparsely populated county is so big...and we have to do a lot of driving for games......most over 30 minutes away from home...and some over an hour!

Last bit of news.........Sarah will be 16 years old on Sunday!!!!

Well, time is up! Maybe I will come back here next Tuesday!

God bless your week!

Chari

Just the words I need to hear.....

Isn't it always that way with The Word?

The Lord's mercies are without end.
Psalm 100:2
God will give us strength to serve him.
St. Francis Xavier, 16th century

I have finally found a Catholic "scripture a day" website............which also includes a quote from a saint. Now that's convenient! :) I am so happy about this!

Please pray for my cousin. She is in the ICU with a very serious condition.

Love, chari

Why do I think I have suddenly gone from second nurse tomorrow, to first???

Well, let's see..............there are only ten of us. Plus, 2 supervisors who are OB capable.

The one working tonight, hurt her back.......so, the first nurse for tomorrow is now tonight's night nurse. That's two.

........because, the other night nurse was sick, again, and unavailable. That's three.

Of three regular day shift RN's.........one is in Arkansas, one is on medical leave for her back, still.....and the third has to take one of those required classes and exams that I had to take last September, because she missed it........because she was jet-lagged from her recent return from Jolly Ol' England. That makes six.

Of the ten, four are supplementals......which means we do not have regular shifts.

One is in San Diego for Thanksgiving holidays with her daughter-in-law, because her husband is in Iraq (my friend's son......please pray for him and his separated family!)..........another has a very impressive head cold.........I am not sure where the other RN is, but she also works a regular position at another hospital......so, maybe she is there?

That makes nine.

Plus, my supervisor is in Poland right now........and something was up with the other one....therefore........

.......if you do the math, that leaves only one.

Now do you see why I think it may be ME?

Please pray for my day......my patients......the doctors.....and my kids!

Thanks!

And, you, my friends, and relatives, have a blessed day!!

Love,

Chari

PS.........do not expect any Daybook next Monday.....I will try........but it may be too hard to do with company, get-togethers & three shows in one weekend!

Sudden update!!! Just before I went to bed, I tried calling OB one more time.........and found out that the RN out with back problems returns to work tomorrow for the first time since mid-September! YAY!!!! This makes me so happy........since it is having this full-time nurse out that has had me squeaking by as the first nurse. I would much rather be her second........we have fun working together! And, I rest easier in her expertise. :)

Even though she will be there......I do expect there is a good chance I may be working tomorrow.........

A very good night!

Another Novena for the Election

My friend Alice sent this out on her novena email list:

This Novena to the Sacred Heart was said daily by St. Padre Pio for all those who asked for his prayers.

Please consider offering it once on November 3rd (or 4th) or nine times (nine consecutive hours) for our nation and for the outcome of the election.

Please click here for novena prayer:

Here it is below:

Glorious Weather at Gloria's!

I only have a brief moment to be here........or, maybe more....who knows how it will turn out. :)

I have arrived in San Francisco, one of my favorite cities in the world.........(I might as well say country, since I have only been to a few cities outside of the United States. I will have to remedy that someday. :) ).......to be present at the baptism of Benedict Michael into the Catholic Church. He is the son of our dear, and very frequently mentioned friends on this blog, Gloria and John G.

He will be baptized on Sunday afternoon, tomorrow....we will spend some time at the celebration afterwards...and then head home....because, my Monday schedule ominously awaits me. :/

We arrived on Thursday evening, just in time for me to partake of a Catholic homeschooling MOM'S NIGHT OUT. I got to spend a few hours with missed friends, and meet a new one. Oh, and eat a dinner at a restaurant. :)

I love holding Benedict! He is so sweet. So mellow. And, it is so interesting, the way he really looks just like John. The older sisters say: LOOK, DADDY! You shrunk! :) How true this is. Like Gloria says, of course, Benedict IS cuter. :) He has elfin ears like one of his older sisters did.

I have been holding him for over an hour and a half.........first he was in the quiet-alert state for over an hour, and I even got a little grin out of him. Then he quietly zonked, but not before his mother, and then his brother, scared him with clanging dishes and silverware. His mommy has run to take a shower.

His three older sisters are rehearsing a play, directed by Sarah & Maddelyn. They will be performing after mom gets out of the shower. Gloria and I are hoping to find time today to run to Joann's and the scrapbook store to get supplies for First Holy Communion Notebooks for her two oldest girls, Catherine & Claremarie and for my youngest, Malachy. I am going to suggest she start her 5 1/2 year old, too. She will be wanting to be a part of it.

I guess I am having to get used to traveling as an abbreviated family. It looks like we are going to have more and more times when they just cannot all join us on our excursions. On this trip, I have only Sarah, Maddelyn & Malachy. Amazing how much easier it is to navigate such a small crowd. But, it is always sad when some of us have memories, and the others do not.

Anne got sick, so she could not join us, though it was the plan that she come. Matthew has WAAAY too much school work due this coming week, plus it is only two weeks till the SATs. Garrett wanted to stay for his soccer game........he almost came with us.........until we heard that two other teammates were going to miss the game. Since he missed two games two weeks ago from camp and illness, we thought he should stay. Marty is taking him out in the woods tomorrow for woodcutting.

Prayer requests: For....

*our travels home on Sunday, especially since at least half the drive it will be dark

*for all of the graces present at the Baptism to be welcomed by the participants

*for the Godfather of Benedict, Gloria's brother, driving all night from Los Angeles to be present at the baptism

*for my family woodcutting tomorrow

*for all moms of many, juggling a life with a newborn.......you all know who you are......and I personally know your struggles :)

*for a friend with the blues

*for an old internet homeschooling friend whose 21 month old was found floating in his aunt's pool...but, it looks like he may be getting better.....pray HARD!!

*for the family of a Catholic homeschooling family who recently lost their five year old due to an accident

I have to go now!

Goodbye and God bless!

Love,

Chari

Saint Gerard List

After reading my last post........and thinking of all of the pregnant moms I left off the list......I think I will add a Saint Gerard's prayer list permanently to my Daybook posts.

But, I will begin it here now.....and then just add it for Monday's Daybook post.

EDC is the term for "expected date of confinement"...........a bit old-fashioned term :) ......some use EDD, "expected date of delivery"........but not me. :)

My local friends Maria #8, EDC mid-October, Sherry #3, EDC early Dec

Elizabeth #9, due the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, December 8th, and experiencing complications as I write......and is now on strict bedrest.

Kim of Starry Sky Ranch, #10?........we visited her family while on our Star-Spangled Adventure 2007

Best friends, Alice #8 and Lissa #6

Another sorta-local mom, Gloria #8?, EDC January, I think.

Internet friends, DonnaMarie #9?, due any moment, and with other issues in life to deal with.........Stefoodie, hmmm........when is Stef due?

Can you think of any others???

Thanks be to God for the healthy delivery of.......

Jaylen Reeves to my sister Jennifer & Rob #4...um, that would be a girl :)
AND
Benedict Michael to my "sister" Gloria & John #6 :)

Go to Jennifer's blog above, to see photos!

AND, to the mom expecting her sixth and was overdue, she delivered her second girl last week, using the same name as one of my girls!

I am very sad tonight.......

My Aunt Martha died this morning. I have only seen her a few times in the past 19 years.......due to living so far away.......but I have lots of childhood memories. Everyone loved Aunt Martha......she had this special Aunt Martha laugh......I can hear it now. I am so in shock that we can never hear her laugh again. It just breaks my heart........especially for my uncle and my two cousins. I am so sad for them. It was so completely unexpected. I am so glad that in the last few years I was able to take my children to meet her (and my uncle and cousins) on one of our trips down south.

My mind flashes like a movie, moving so fast, too fast........and I see all the places where Aunt Martha was in the picture of my life.........and the influences she had on me......on my sister, too.

......living with their family for about three months, when I was 11 years old
.....making bread dough baskets
........French dressing on salads
.......Tommy, the turtle, who hibernated in the closet, and ate the lettuce leaves
......."hot dog" dogs
.......a female cat named Charlie Brown.....who had kittens one day
......bowling with my mom, and all of us cousins hanging out in the play room at the bowling alley
......fixing my hair before school
......stability after our parents divorce (sorry, parents, its true)
.......her sweet smile
......making lunches for us for school.......and milk money
.......providing matching boy cousins for my sister and I
......going on a campout when I was about 4 years
.......her under 5-foot stature......what was she, 4'10" maybe?
........she and my uncle came to my wedding AND my college graduation
.........when I use my china, I know that at least a third of it was a wedding gift from she and my uncle
......swimming in their pool
.....playing silly games like Pigs, or whatever that was.....and lots of Milebourne :)
........the way she would say my uncle's name in that funny scolding way, when he teased
....her generosity
........her sweetness
......her kindness
......her cheerful temperment
.......her non-judgemental manners
.......the fact that after 40-some years of my life......she did not look any different than when I first remembered her

My sister will help me think of more.......she is good at that.....and I will add more as I remember.

Funny........I was looking for something in my email inbox tonight, and I found the last email my aunt sent to me:

Chari

Beautiful, but glad I'm only looking at photos! Makes me cold.

Aunt Martha

This, in reference to my snow post.

Here are some old photos........

Aunt Martha, my dad and my grandfater, her father-in-law. They were at a party.......I AM embarrassed by my father's purple shirt. 1960's.....is it obvious?

More 1960's.........Aunt Martha sitting on Santa's lap.........the santa who is really my uncle, her brother-in-law.

I was very surprised to find this photo! My sister and I are playing games with our cousins, Aunt Martha's boys. I am the one in the white blouse. We are playing Milebourne! 1970's now.....

You can see the smile on her face.......the one I well-remember

And, here is the last time I saw Aunt Martha. This includes her whole family, except one daughter-in-law and a granddaughter who was born later.........and my six kids, too. We met for breakfast after one of our Disneyland trips. I thank God we had this visit.

May God grant you eternal rest, my dear Aunt Martha.
**********************************

It is late tonight.........we had a busy day, having our annual Lebanese feast. Please pray for my Uncle and my cousins. Also for my other uncle, his younger brother, who has been diagnosed with skin cancer. And, also for my mother, their sister in the middle, who is suffering an acute bout of bursitis right now, with little pain relief..............plus some other issues. And lastly, for my almost 87 year old grandmother, who is the mama to all of these folks. Thank you, friends.

God bless you all........

Prayers for tomorrow please?

One of my kids is having oral surgery in the morning.........could you please pray it all goes well?

I am always nervous when my kids go under general anesthesia. Kind of creeps me out. I am glad it does not happen often. It is kind of like a faith thing, you know. You give your child to the experts (and God) and just have to let go, and let God.

Also, I seem to have come down with the family sickness.........please pray I get over it quickly, as it is a 3 hr round-trip to the oral surgeon tomorrow.....hard to do when you feel yucky.

Thanks, friends. This is our first of TWO oral surgeries in this family before the end of the year.........so, I will be back.....
