Haven Heartbeats
Hi, there! Just thought I would jot a letter off to you this morning.
I have a feeling all of my children will be sleeping in till at least ten am. They had a party last night. It was supposed to have happened last Thursday night while we had friends in town.........but, a few folks got sick so we had to postpone. The party was a barbeque followed by "a dance." Even last night a few folks could not come due to more illness. Ha, ha...I guess that includes me, too! I woke up yesterday am with nausea and malaise. I slept most of the day. Horizontal was the most comfortable position and reading, computering and watching movies was dizzying. By late evening I felt good enough to grab some photos of the party.
The dance was held on the front lawn where Matthew had mown a dance floor in the grass. He then used his theater lights to surround the dance floor with lights, including colored. He took the stereo outside, too. There was a table set up with punch and desserts. I know the kids had a great time......and they had to be made to quit dancing at 1am. I hope the neighbors are not too mad at us. :/ There was a lot of swing dancing (Matthew did not re-injure his knee! :) ), dancing to 80's and 50's music and the Virginia Reel, of course. The crowd was 12 to 23 years old, except for 7yo Malachy, who came in at one point and told me, "I am having so much fun dancing out there!" And he sure did, trying to keep up with the big boys! There were sixteen total, till Marty came home and joined the dancing. He had been home earlier and did the barbequing for the kids. All I did was lay in my bed. :)
When I looked out at the crowd of kids, all I saw were homeschoolers. Funny, there was a time when the kids didn't really have many friends.......and now, they actually have a bit of a social life. One of the things I love about homeschooled kids is their ability to interact well with people of all ages, and you could really see that last night. Except for two guests, all of the guests were present with at least one to two more more of their siblings. That is another thing I love about homeschool kids: how well they can socialize in their sibling groups. They were such a great group of kids! Our friends who had been visiting the week before were greatly missed......and this was mentioned on several occasions from several of my children.
I have to say, since this dance was a success, I do believe there will be plans to do this at least once each summer. What joy to dance with your friends, under the light of a full moon!
The clean-up does not look too bad this morning.
Marty came home last night in a new car for Anne. She will not actually get to own it, but use it while she is away at college. It is a 2001 Honda Accord, 2 door. I just went out and peeked at it. It is immaculate inside, with leather seats. It is gold metallic and formerly owned by a grandmother who only put 40,000, miles on it. Looks great! Anne will be putting daily miles on it since she will live with Jennifer in the south of town.....and the university is in the north of town. Anne said she loved driving it last night. Marty is so good to his kids.
Speaking of Anne and school, we will move her over on the 16th, probably, and we will stay a week to visit with our family there. Anne has an orientation day on the 20th. She starts school on the 24th. She is excited, but worried these classes will be more challenging than the JC. We all just keep telling her she will be fine. :) She will be taking Spanish, an English class, a drama class and something else....all are basic UNR requirements.
And as for Matthew, he will be flying out of San Francisco International Airport on Monday the 10th, our 24th wedding anniversary. It looks like I will drive him down with at least a couple of my kids. We will stay with our friends, John and Gloria. We still have a lot to do to get him ready. He needs patches sewn on his Rotary jacket, to narrow his packing down and load in the duffle bag, or two, to pick up a few more gifts for his host families (and wrap them), learn to iron, and to make a DVD of his life here. I am sure there is more......but these are the priorities. I will start working on the patches when I finish this letter.
Our garden is doing well, but desperately needs weeding.......kids are going to have to go do that today! Our chicks are getting so big......it is funny to hear them still peeping. They are nine weeks now. They are nice group of ladies. So, far, I think I only have one rooster...but still too early to tell for sure. After a few losses, we are down to 42 now.
We ran out of hot water yesterday.......actually, we ran out of fuel to heat our water. Apparently, the float is not working right, and we missed the getting low sign. I just got a call that the guy can bring fuel today........I am glad......I need a shower, a load of laundry washed and have a full dishwasher.
I am getting sleepy now, so I will sign off. It was nice to get to use Anne's new laptop while laying on the couch to write this. Matthew has a new laptop as well.....and I will inherit Anne's old lap top for use around here for me and the other kids.
Goodbye and God bless, for now,
Love, Chari

Dear Grandma,
It was so nice to get a handwritten letter from somebody. :) Someday, I will write more letters by hand...just like I used to......before children. Remeber how I used to write those letters to you and mamaw?
I meant to write sooner, but I worked for a couple of days, and then got sick.........today is day 9 of my cold...actually day seven, if you only count from when I got stuffy and felt yucky. The cough preceded this by two days. And, after I got better, I had relapses.
The rain has been falling so hard here........I am wondering if we really did get the 9 inches of rain someone predicted. I sure hope so! The wind howled fierce for the whole time, too. Today we awakened to fresh snow, about 4 inches. We should be getting snow through Friday, I hear. The forecast shows Saturday clear, with more snow on Sunday & Monday. I will try to take the kids skiing on Saturday. I hope to be well enough by then. I am in the mood for scrapbooking...which I can justify doing at the ski park...but not at home. :)
I have no idea when I will next be going to Carson City...maybe in June? Probably in June. So, it does not make sense to have me bring your request in that way. Could we perhaps have you mail them to my dad's house.......and have the party pick up the package there? Jennifer expects to come for a visit in late May to see the kids in their play...but that is still so late. I do not expect any visits from any Nevada folks before that. Let me know what you think......and I can email my dad's address to you...oh, you probably have it already.
Thank you for the vegan recipes......the carrot hot dog is hilarious! :) I will pass these on. One of my vegans has decided she has been vegan so long now.....she cannot remember exactly why she went that way.....so, she has loosened her diet a bit.
Have I ever told you I LOVE your handwriting? It is so consistent, so lovely. I can always recognize notes in your writing.
It is now official that Matthew has QUALIFIED to travel with the Rotary Youth Exchange Program......now they just need to find him a country.......a host club who will take the tall, aged, unvaccinated creature. :) They feel pretty confident there will be one club willing to take him. Right now they are focusing in Italian-speaking Switzerland, because he wants to learn Italian. They have told him he will need to learn German first because it is the national language there. If Switzerland does not work out......I believe they will try Belgium, and then Germany. We are all so jealous of him. :)
Anne REALLY wants to go to Nevada-Reno...........we are waiting to see if she qualifies for any scholarships.....and then she will need to decide. There, or San Francisco State University. I think it will be May before we know for sure......I cannot remember. It is hard not knowing for sure, for so long. She just kind of wants to get on with her life......you know?
My cousin whom I asked for prayers is still in a coma........I guess last week she squeezed a finger...and something else....opened her eyes? I cannot remember. It is Uncle Howard's oldest, Tina.......so, really my dad's first cousin, not mine. She is still in the hospital, too, I believe. It is so sad...
Maddelyn is in her class right now, so I am at the college library, taking the time to write here. The round trip to the college is about 25 minutes....so, no sense in driving home for only a 50 minute class, eh?
I have to teach childbirth classes tonight. I have only one person signed up....and I have not spoken to her in two months. Once in a while someone shows up without signing up.....so, hopefully that will happen tonight.
Oh, one more thing before I have to go.......the kids have spring break the week of March 16th......we were wondering IF we could work if out....could we come for a 4 night visit? There are A LOT of things on the calendar......we would have to see if we could even make it work....so no promises. But, we have been desperately looking at our calendar for over six months, to see when we ALL could come see you. This just might work. What do you think?
Well, Maddelyn is done and she hates it when she has to wait. :) I need to wrap this up.
We love you and miss you!
Love,
Chari & family

HAVEN HEARTBEATS
Remember I mentioned the hospital bill here? Well, I got a chance to chat with someone from billing when I was at work Monday.....she "chased" me down, she said..............and she gave me some very good news!
Looks like I am ging to get a 30% discount and monthly payments for 30 months, no interest. That makes me feel slightly better. But only slightly...........I still want that gazebo...........
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There is a lot of sewing going on around here! The girls are going nuts sewing two more Regency costumes and making Regency bonnets to take with them out of town. They are having such fun! Here is a link to Anne's blog where you can see the first one that she sewed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We are going out of town this weekend. We will be gone for a week. I know you are used to me not getting posts on here......but I have a good reason next week. Most of the time will be without internet.......but maybe at the end of the week I may find time to post something.
We are visiting our dear friends (a Catholic homeschooing family) in the Sierra Nevadas, on the western side. We are SO excited. And, Anne gets to go, too! One of her best friends is here, as well as Matthew's.......as well as mine.........and probably Garrett's and someday Malachy's, too!
We will being staying part of the time at her in-laws "lake house" which I just found out is one of the best recreational lakes in California.........who knew? I always pictured it as a little mountain lake. What a special treat!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And, when we return home, we will have some of our other best friends over for a visit from Nevada..........another Catholic homeschooling family. This family also contains one of Anne's best friends.........Matthew's too......and mine also........and another fun playmate for Garrett.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
One of the exciting things this summer is that Anne has managed to do a six-week math course in three weeks at the local JC...............her teacher just happens to be a Catholic homeschooling mom...........and has allowed Anne to work on ahead of the class. This means Anne will have THREE weeks of summer off from school..........she SO needs this! So do I! :)> It will start this Friday afternoon...............and includes all of the visits above plus a camping trip to the coast with her family..........um, that would be us!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I need to go write a letter of reference for a Catholic homeschool young lady for a wonderful college.............please pray to the Holy Ghost that I can write the words needed!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
God bless you until I "see" you again!

Chari

An Original Poem....
My oldest (19yrs) was to write a poem for her British Literature class at the local college. Most people balk at being TOLD to write a poem......add Anne to that list. :) The poem was to be in a similar style to William Blake (1757–1827). I hear tell, she sat at the table saying: Treadmill, Treadmill.........Winter, Winter.........and finally in frustration, looking at her notebook, found her inspiration! What do you think? She writes like a poet to me! :)
***********************
The Sighs of a Non-poet
Notebook! Notebook! gleaming white
For Poetry I cannot write
Heavily my heart doth sigh,
I’m longing for a cup of chai.
Searching my mind for a single rhyme,
This poem is due, but I need more time
Who can help—some muse perhap’?
Oh glad would I sit in Inspiration’s lap.
Type, I must, but all in vain
My soul dry, I distrust my brain;
I am not Milton, Blake, or More,
Creating stanzas is such a chore.
Notebook! Notebook! gleaming white
Yet Poetry I’m forced to write
Fill the page with a clever lie,
Now where is that cup of chai?
Disclaimer: Anne considers herself poet in no way whatsoever.
*****************************
She actually wrote that last comment at the top of her paper. Poem reprinted here with pernission from the author. :)
It is based on the following poem of Blake's:
William Blake.
The Tiger
TIGER, tiger, burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?
In what distant deeps or skies
Burnt the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand dare seize the fire?
And what shoulder and what art
Could twist the sinews of thy heart?
And when thy heart began to beat,
What dread hand and what dread feet?
What the hammer? what the chain?
In what furnace was thy brain?
What the anvil? What dread grasp
Dare its deadly terrors clasp?
When the stars threw down their spears,
And water'd heaven with their tears,
Did He smile His work to see?
Did He who made the lamb make thee?
Tiger, tiger, burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?
Enjoy! Blessings on this snowy night!
